Marijuana and male breasts

With medical marijuana becoming legal in states across the U.S. there has been recent media coverage of the claim that there is a definitive link between marijuana usage and male breast development.
.
Studies on the issue are few and far between since marijuana is still illegal in most states, but many plastic surgeons believe there is a link. One study found that marijuana has “widespread effects on multiple hormonal systems, including gonadal, adrenal, prolactin, growth hormone, and thyroid hormone regulation.  When the drug throws off the normal balance of hormones, estrogen levels rise and stimulate breast tissue growth.”

If you’re a guy and you’re worried about gynecomastia, you shouldn’t smoke pot because there’s a link.” Robert X. Murphy Jr., president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, agreed that this was the prevailing opinion among plastic surgeons.

You can read more about gynecomastia surgery on Dr. Peterson's website

the post pregnancy pooch

Pregnancy and childbirth can take a toll on your body. The appearance of the post-pregnancy pooch- no matter how much exercise you try or weight you lose, often remains. For many women, a tummy tuck that Dr. Jack Peterson combines with liposuction of the abdomen may offer a solution.

What is a tummy tuck?

During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles stretch to allow for expansion of the uterus. This can cause the abdominal muscles to separate completely in a condition called diastasis recti, which can be permanent. For some women, a tummy tuck will be needed to repair permanent muscle separation and laxity.
Along with the stretching of skin comes stretch marks- another tell tale sign of pregnancy and/or weight gain. A tummy tuck also removes excess skin and tissue for a smoother, firmer look. Adding liposuction allows Dr. Peterson to add abdominal sculpting along with the removal of excess skin and correction of muscle separation repair to provide a solution for the post pregnancy pooch.

FDA approves Botox for crows feet around eyes

On September 11, the FDA approved Botox for wrinkles around the eyes often referred to as "crows feet". Botox  has been FDA approved for wrinkles between the eyes (referred to as 1,2 or 3's) since 2002.

Botox has been used cosmetically "off label" for years  to treat wrinkles around the eyes. FDA approval will not really change anything- except perhaps a marketing edge over its competitors for the short term.

Dr. Jack Peterson in Topeka injects Botox personally and we can make same day appointments.

Change your fortune with Palm Plastic surgery?

In Japan, the latest craze is to change your fortune with palm plastic surgery.

Here is the concept. : change the way your palm is read by changing the lines on your palm- it will change your future.

All you need is a plastic surgeon with an electric scalpel who has a knowledge of palmistry. Draw the lines on your hand and let them work the magic you want. An "emperor's line for great success and good fortune, a marriage line for wedding bells? How about a money-luck line to win the lottery or a job promotion?

Angelina Jolie and her breast reconstruction

Todays news revealed that actress Angelina Jolie had made the choice to have a proactive double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. There are really two pieces of news here:
First, obviously, the decision to have a double mastectomy to be proactive against her high genetic risk factor for breast cancer.

Second, and possibly overlooked at first, is her decision to proceed with breast reconstruction at the time of her mastectomy. 7 out of every 10 women are never told about breast reconstruction as an option after mastectomy and the numbers are even worse for minorities.

Skin Cancer increasing in adolescents

In a recent sudy published in Pediatrics, since the 1970's the rate of melanoma has been rising about 2% per year in adolescents. The diagnosis was early twice as common in girls compared to boys. The most frequent melanoma sites in girls were lower limbs and hips, and on boys was face and abdomen.

The study reports increasing trends for melanoma over sun-exposed areas of the face and body and also suggests that tanning facilities may be a major explaination of why the rate is higher in girls.

male breasts in teenage boys affects mental health

Breast enlargement (gynecomastia) negatively affects self esteem and mental/emotional health in teenage males. In a study reported in the April issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, it was found that even mild gynecomastia can have adverse psychological effects in boys.

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of male glandular breast tissue that is very common in adolescent boys. Even with weight loss, the problem will not be corrected in patients who have glandular enlargement or those with excess skin in the breast area. The authors write that "merely having gynecomastia was sufficient to cause significant deficits in general health, social functioning, mental health, self esteem and eating behaviours and attitudes"

It may seem obvious that breast enlargement in males could have a psychological and emotional impact on teenage boys. However, adolescent gynecomastia has historically been a cosmetic procedure and in most cases is not reimbursed by health insurance.

tattoo can mean trouble says FDA

Spring Break, Summer vacation. Let loose and have a little fun? What do you need to know about tattoos?

The FDA has just released a consumer update on a type of temporary tattoo using "black henna".
Black henna may be a mix of henna with other ingredients, or may really be hair dye. The extra ingredient used to blacken the henna is often a coal-tar hair dye containing  p-phenylenediamin (PPD), and ingredient that can cause serious skin reactions.

http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm343932.htm

People who are considering getting permanent tattoos should also be aware that tattoo ink can have a risk of allergies and reactions for some people. The color of the tattoo ink matters. People with a copper allergy can have a bad reaction to blue/green ink. People with red dye allergies can react to red ink. People can have a reaction that looks like poison ivy that never goes away and can get so bad that skin can die.

When tattoo artists mix ink make sure you can see a list of ingredients from the manufacturer so you can check if there are individual ingredients that you already know cause you allergic reactions.

the "gummy bear" implant gets FDA approval

The highly cohesive "gummy bear" implant has just received FDA approval in the U.S. This implant has been available in Europe and Canada for 18 years and went through almost 10 years of clinical trials here in the US.

The new implant was nicknamed the "gummy bear" due to the consistency of the gel. What distinguishes the implant is its gently sloped teardrop shape and firm filling made of highly cohesive silicone gel. If cut in half, the implant will not ooze or lose its shape, yet it's still soft to the touch.

The new implants will be more expensive than the classic cohesive gel that have been available for the last five years. They are not meant for every implant patient and you should meet in consultation with Dr. Peterson in Topeka Kansas to determine if this is a good choice for you for breast augmentation.

Plastic surgery for dogs- $62 million in 2011

Botox to perk up a dogs ear. Fillers to fix broken cartilage. The stuff of dog show champions! Injection therapy to avoid cutting an animal.  Plastic surgery is a growing part of the US pet industry.

According to insurer PetPlan, American dog owners spent $62 million on plastic surgery in 2011- but most are not about vanity, but improving quality of life. Two conditions are increasingly common among purebred and inbred dogs. Shar-peis, chows, bloodhounds can suffer from a problem where droopy skin turns eyelids inward and makes the lash scratch the eye. Dogs with squished in faces-bulldogs, boston terriers can have tissue that obstructs their airways- so a nose job is life saving.

how to read the new label on sunscreen

New sunscreen labels will make it easier for you to make an informed choice on sunscreen.

A mix of old and new labels will remain on the shelf for a period of time because the FDA has allowed a phase-in of the labeling requirements and retailers can choose to sell remaining stock of older labeled product.

UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburns. A good way to remember this is UVB = UVBURN!  A product labeled with SPF (sun protection factor) minimizes UVB (sunburn) rays. The higher the SPF, the more protection against UVB rays. Watch for an SPF of at least 15.

UVB and UVA rays in combination create skin cancer and skin aging issues. A product labeled BROAD SPECTRUM will help minimize both UVB and UVA rays.

Look for a sunscreen that is labeled both    BROAD SPECTRUM and SPF.
